I’ve been out paddling a few times recently but today was without doubt my biggest test to date, a 30 km paddle around the island of Scalpay, beginning and ending at Sconser (Skye). It was a fine day with just a very light wind. Conditions were good and when we reached Scalpay we headed clockwise around the island. Conditions became more challenging on the other side of the island and I had to focus all my attention on staying in my boat! I learned a new term today, it was a ‘beam sea’ which meant the waves were coming onto the side of the boat. I was instructed to paddle with confidence and stay relaxed. It seemed to work and I made it into calmer waters without capsizing. As we approached the south end of the island the water was like a millpond. This is where we stopped for lunch. Very tired but very happy to have managed a 30km paddle, 6 hour paddle.
